Metastate has ceased its activities on the 31st of January 2021. The team members have joined a new company, checkout open positions on Heliax.
We’re interested in identifying the key factors which will determine how distributed ledger technology will be remembered in the history books a century hence, and focusing our comparative advantage on ensuring that these requirements are met.
We have neither headquarters nor hubs - our team is spread across the globe.
High degree of freedom and autonomy on when you work, what you work on, and whom you work with.
We work on solving hard problems with novel methods, and our initial guesses are often wrong - we adopt a playful attitude and always challenge our own assumptions.
Twice a year, we all meet to work, learn, and go hiking.
Metastate is a research and engineering team focused on implementing cutting-edge research from numerous disciplines (distributed systems, PLT, zero-knowledge cryptography) and deploying them to solve hard problems in the blockchain space, such as scalability, secure smart contract languages, secure randomness or privacy. In addition to the open-source R&D areas, Metastate is expanding its focus towards mainstream end-users, with the goals of making financial sovereignty, privacy-enhancing, and secure technologies as accessible for as many people as possible.
Metastate is a remote-first team, currently composed of cross-disciplinary researchers and engineers located around the world. Our work culture is characterized by open-allocation, where team members have a high degree of freedom and autonomy in choosing when to work, what to work on, and whom to work with.

“Smart contracts are not secure enough for finance, law, or systems engineering.”
Smart contracts are security-critical, performance-sensitive, and bug-prone. Metastate is working on a dependently-typed smart contract language, Juvix, which utilises recent advancements in type theory to allow developers to write code in a high-level functional language, compile it to gas-efficient output VM instructions, and formally verify the safety of their contracts prior to deployment & execution. PLT at Metastate focuses on applying the latest research in type theory and programming language design to concrete problems in the distributed ledger space. We are looking for a functional compiler engineer to work on various parts of the Juvix stack, all the way from optimising inlining heuristics in the core compiler passes to using Juvix’s granular linearity information in order to write an efficient LLVM compilation backend. This role offers the chance to work closely with a small team on compelling cross-disciplinary problems in computer science, PLT, cryptography, and economics, and enjoy a high degree of independence in working conditions and prioritisation.
Remote or local (Zürich/Zug, Berlin). When remote, preferred if mostly located within (+/- 7 hours) Central European time zones. Ideally someone who enjoys nature and hiking 🏔️.

“Blockchains do not scale to a global user-base of seven billion people.”
Rust engineering at Metastate focuses on building, extending, and maintaining decentralized, permissionless, and censorship-resistant protocols. We are looking for experienced Rust developers that are interested in applying novel research to create high-quality open-source technology and solve outstanding problems in the blockchain space. As a member of the core protocol engineering team, you will be working on distributed ledger technology implemented in Rust, all the way up and down the stack from the P2P layer to consensus algorithms, smart contract systems, proof-of-stake incentive mechanisms, privacy-enhancing cryptographic components, and on-chain governance procedures. This role offers the chance to work closely on compelling cross-disciplinary problems in computer science, systems engineering, cryptography, and economics, and enjoy a high degree of independence in working conditions and prioritization.
Remote or local (Zürich/Zug, Berlin). When remote, preferred if mostly located within (+/- 7 hours) Central European time zones. Ideally someone who enjoys nature and hiking 🏔️.

Distributed systems research engineering at Metastate focuses on designing, building, extending, and maintaining decentralized, permissionless, and censorship-resistant protocols. We are looking for experienced distributed systems engineers that are interested in applying novel research to create high-quality open-source technology and solve outstanding problems in the blockchain space. As a member of the core protocol engineering team, you will be working on distributed ledger technology implemented in Rust, with a particular focus on distributed systems: consensus algorithms and peer-to-peer networking layers. You’ll work both on the research and implementation side to ensure that our protocols are both theoretically sound and correctly realized in code. This role offers the chance to work closely on compelling cross-disciplinary problems in computer science, systems engineering, cryptography, and economics, and enjoy a high degree of independence in working conditions and prioritization.

“Blockchains are not private enough for safe use by citizens, corporations, or dissidents.”
Metastate is looking for a cryptographer & researcher interested in zero-knowledge cryptographic protocols and their application to distributed ledger technology to work with us to design, evaluate, and implement zero-knowledge proof constructions such as zkSNARKs and zkSTARKs, distributed cryptographic protocols such as threshold encryption and distributed key generation, and cryptographic primitives such as elliptic curves and hash functions, then put this cryptography into practice in order to realise privacy and scalability capabilities required by the next generation of blockchain networks.
This role offers the chance to work closely with a small team on compelling cross-disciplinary problems in theoretical computer science, cryptography, game theory, economics, and systems design, and enjoy a high degree of independence in working conditions and task prioritization.
Remote or local (Zürich/Zug, Berlin). When remote, preferred if mostly located within (+/- 7 hours) Central European time zones. North America is fine.
Ideally someone who enjoys travel, nature and hiking. Often we find that protocols are best designed not in a meeting room but rather on a trail 🏔️.
We are looking for a network engineer interested in distributed ledger technology to build, improve, and scale our physical and cloud-based proof-of-stake validation infrastructure. As a blockchain infrastructure engineer, you will work with us in evaluating, deploying, monitoring, maintaining, and upgrading consensus & validation nodes on the most novel and experimental blockchain networks.
This role offers the chance to work closely with a team on compelling cross-disciplinary problems in computer science, cryptography, and economics, and enjoy a high degree of independence in working conditions and prioritization.
Competitive compensation in a negotiable mix of salary and equity. Remote or local (Zürich/Zug, Berlin). When remote, located in Central Europe. Ideally someone who enjoys nature and hiking 🏔️.
